Once upon a time Pulau Tekong... Pada suatu masa Pulau Tekong...

Pulau Tekong (Besar), when you hear the name of this island, most would think of NS (National Service) or ghostly tales. Other than these, not many would know more. I myself had gone through BMT (Basic Military Training) there in the year 2000. Before that, I was last at the island when I was 6 in the year 1986. The Singapore's government took over the island in the year 1988 (if I am not wrong).

Decades ago, this island had around 4000-5000 inhabitants, most of them were Malays or Chinese. Most of the Malays were of Pahang/Terengganu descent. In the 1850s, there was a conflict in Pahang which forced its people to seek refuge in Johor, Pulau Tekong Kechil, Pulau Tekong Besar, and Singapore.

My mother was from Kg Pahang/Selabin, Pulau Tekong Besar. She said that her late mother (my late grandmother) told her about her roots in Pahang. My late grandfather was from Terengganu. Because of the conflict, their families had to seek refuge elsewhere while waiting for the conflict to end. Nonetheless, most of the people did not return to Pahang/Terengganu even after the conflict was over. It could be due to the fact that they felt comfortable in their new place or worried that the conflict would start again. Furthermore, in those days, transportation means were not as easily available as now. I understand that most people had built villages in these new places (Pulau Tekong Kechil & Besar, Telok Ramunia in Johor, Telok Blangah (Bt.Purmei) in Singapore and a few others.)

In Pulau Tekong Besar, which was my mother’s village, most people were related to each other either by blood or marriage. Same goes to the rest of the villages. This is because most of the people were from Pahang/Terengganu. My mother said that most of the people in her village were relatives. With that, the first objective of this blog is to:

** Search for relatives whom we have lost contact with. The list of relatives that I have now is mostly from Kg. Pahang, Kg. Selabin and Kg Batu Koyok. This is incomplete and there is vague information. It would be great if I could get to know more about relatives in the other villages (including those in Johor Bahru, etc). **

The other objectives are to know more about Pulau Tekong Besar or Pulau Tekong Kechil, no matter what it is, for example:

* Places like the mosques, schools, community centres, plantations, etc.
* Cemeteries or shrines.
* The royal family of Johore/Pahang who lived there before.
* Relations with Kg. Glam (Kota Di-Raja)
* Istana Merak?
* Other related places such as Pekan Pahang (Pahang); Lepau, Telok Ramunia, Perigi Acheh, Tg. Langsat (Johor Bahru); Kallang, Pahang Street, Kg. Engku Aman, Telok Blangah, Seletar, Pulau Sajahat, Pulau Ubin (Singapore) etc.
* The origins of the name ‘Tekong’ and the names of the villages there.
* Visit by Queen Elizabeth
* Antiques or heirlooms such as the keris, woks, etc.
* Photographs taken from there.

And so on...

Assalammualaikum wr wb,

Pulau Tekong (Besar), apabila mendengar nama pulau ini, ramai yang akan memikirkan tentang ‘NS ‘(Perkhidmatan Negara) ataupun kisah-kisah hantu. Tidak ramai orang yang mengetahui selain dari itu. Saya sendiri melalui BMT (Latihan Asas Army) di sana pada tahun 2000. Sebelum itu, kali terakhir saya di sana adalah pada umur saya agak-agak 6 tahun sekitar tahun 1986. Kerajaan Singapura mengambil alih sepenuhnya pulau itu pada kira-kira pada tahun 1988 (kalau tidak silap saya).

Seketika dahulu pulau ini pernah dipenghuni sekitar 4000-5000 orang, kebanyakkannya berbangsa Melayu & Cina. Dari yang berbangsa Melayu pula, ramai adalah dari keturunan Pahang/T’ganu. Sekitar tahun 1850an dahulu tercetus peperangan di Pahang yang menyebabkan ramai penduduknya lari ke Johor, Pulau Tekong Kechil, Pulau Tekong Besar, dan Singapura untuk menyelamatkan diri.

Ibu saya berasal dari Kg Pahang/Selabin, Pulau Tekong Besar. Ibu saya mengatakan bahawa arwah ibunya (arwah nenek saya) menceritakan tentang asal usulnya yang bermula dari Pahang. Arwah atuk saya pula dari T’ganu. Kerana perang keluarga mereka terpaksa melarikan diri dan mencari tempat bersinggah sementara menunggu perang tamat. Akan tetapi setelah perang berakhir ramai pula yang tidak kembali pulang ke Pahang/T’ganu. Mungkin disebabkan mereka telah selesa di tempat baru, ataupun takut perang berulang. Lagipun zaman dulu tidaklah semudah zaman sekarang, hendak kemana-mana ada pelbagai jenis pengangkutan. Saya difahamkan ramai yang telah mendirikan perkampungan di tempat-tempat persinggahan tersebut (Pulau Tekong Kechil & Besar, Telok Ramunia di Johor, Telok Belanga (Bt.Purmei) di Singapura dan beberapa lagi tempat lain.)

Pulau Tekong Besar, di kampung ibu saya, ramai yang mempunyai pertalian darah sama ada secara langsung ataupun melalui perkahwinan. Begitu juga di kampung-kampung lain, ramai yang berkaitan. (Oleh kerana kebanyakkan penduduk berasal dari Pahang/T’ganu). Ibu saya mengatakan di kampungnya hampir semua adalah saudara. Oleh kerana itu lahirlah objektif pertama saya mengapa saya menulis blog ini, iaitu :-

** Mencari pertalian saudara yang telah terputus ataupun hilang. Catatan pertalian saudara yang saya ada sekarang kebanyakkan berasal dari Kg. Pahang, Kg. Selabin & Kg Batu Koyok, itu pun tidak lengkap dan banyak maklumat yang samar-samar. Alangkah baiknya kalau dapat mengetahui tentang saudara-saudara di kampung-kampung lain (termasuk di Johor Baru dll). **

Objektif yang lain adalah untuk lebih mengetahui tentang Pulau Tekong Besar atau Pulau Tekong Kechil tak kisahlah apa, seperti :-

* Tempat-tempat seperti masjid, sekolah, balai rakyat, ladang di sana dll.
* Kubur ataupun makam.
* Keluarga Di-Raja Johor/Pahang yang pernah tinggal di sana.
* Kaitan dengan Kg.Glam (Kota Di-Raja)
* Istana Merak?
* Tempat-tempat lain yang berkaitan seperti Pekan Pahang (Pahang); Lepau, Telok Ramunia, Perigi Acheh, Tg. Langsat (Johor Bahru); Kallang, Pahang Street, Kg. Engku Aman, Telok Blangah, Seletar, Pulau Sajahat, Pulau Ubin (Singapura) dll.
* Asal-usul nama ‘Tekong’ dan nama kampung-kampung di sana.
* Lawatan Queen Elizabeth

* Barang-barang pusaka seperti keris, kuali dll.
* Gambar-gambar dari sana.
